How do I explain diabetes and taking shots to my newly diagnosed 6 year old?

Question by : How do I explain diabetes and taking shots to my newly diagnosed 6 year old?
What’s the best way to explain type 1 diabetes to my newly diagnosed 6 year old?
So my 6 year old son was diagnosed recently with type 1 diabetes. He throws a living fit when it’s time for a shot. He keeps asking why…and saying it hurts and no! I’ve never been good with words and explaining stuff and all I’ve said was it’s so you don’t get sick. I need some help on a good way to explain this to him.

I would be very cross with your doctor for not helping you with that. Part of their job when it comes to long term care of a disease like they is to help explain it to children in terms that they can understand.

I would go back to him or her and ask that they help you explain it to your son. Or if they can not, there are diabetic educators that can help explain it as well as providing assistance on how to meal plan healthy meals for picky eaters. Ask your doctor to refer you to one of them.

What is the type of diabetes where you don’t necessarily have to be overweight?

Question by : What is the type of diabetes where you don’t necessarily have to be overweight?
Today was the third or fourth day in the past year where I almost fainted or fainted doing very little activity. My mother’s friend is a nurse and suggested that I go get tested for diabetes. I am not, however, overweight. Is type 2 diabetes the type where you don’t have to be overweight to get it?
I do eat before doing these activities.
I was talking about the one that is genetic. It does run in the family, but it hasn’t shown up in generations.

Q&A: How long does uncontrolled diabetes take to effect the eyes/cause blindness?

Question by 1234: How long does uncontrolled diabetes take to effect the eyes/cause blindness?
I know an African American male with diabetes and hypertension, mid 30’s, normal body weight, diagnosed with diabetes about 3 years ago. He became blind in one eye, the other eye is bleeding and retina tearing. I understand it varies for everyone- is this caused by not controlling the diabetes/hypertension? Im asking because the patient is claiming that they take great care of their sugar and blood pressure. My guess is my friend is not?

Best answer:

Answer by Andrea
After being diabetic for years it will just effect the eye. Even if the sugar is stable.
