I got gestational diabetes when I was pregnant and my Dr. said the stress the baby causes on the body, causes you body to function as if you were in your 50s. The stress brings out any future conditions you may get. When the pregnancy was over I was diabetes free. But I will most likely get it again later if I do not control my diet, sugar intake and exercise regime for the rest of my life.

The insulin pump is a medical device used for the administration of insulin in the treatment of diabetes mellitus, also known as continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion therapy. The device includes: * the pump itself (including controls, processing module, and batteries) * a disposable reservoir for insulin (inside the pump) * a disposable infusion set, including a cannula for subcutaneous insertion (under the skin) and a tubing system to interface the insulin reservoir to the cannula. An insulin pump is an alternative to multiple daily injections of insulin by insulin syringe or an insulin pen and allows for intensive insulin therapy when used in conjunction with blood glucose monitoring and carb counting.

Q&A: Do you always have to take insulin to control gestational diabetes, or can you be prescribed a pill instead?

Question by KiKi: Do you always have to take insulin to control gestational diabetes, or can you be prescribed a pill instead?
I have gestational diabetes that can no longer be controlled through diet. I can not stand needles and am wondering if there is any chance of being prescribed a pill as opposed to insulin shots?
Yes, there are pills on the market used to control blood sugar instead of insulin, I am wondering if anyone was prescribed pills instead of insulin shots.

Best answer:

Answer by Bubbies
There isnt a pill that I am aware of. The shots would probably be the best way anyway, it puts it right into your bloodstream and it can start working now, whereas a pill would have to be absorbed after you swallow it and it digests…

How does the measurement of a blood C peptide level help to determine the type of diabetes?

Question by joli: How does the measurement of a blood C peptide level help to determine the type of diabetes?
Occasionally an adult or child is diagnosed with diabetes who does not fit the stereotypical picture of the type of diabetes associated with their age group. How does the measurement of a blood C peptide level help to determine the type of diabetes?

Best answer:

Answer by micksmixxx
C-peptide is only released when insulin is produced. Therefore, if C-peptide is not present, or is in low concentrations, doctors would, very likely, determine that the patient is suffering from type 1 diabetes. (In type 2 diabetes insulin is still produced, though is not readily used due to insulin resistance.)

Gestational diabetes usually goes away after pregnancy. But once you’ve had gestational diabetes, your chances are 2 in 3 that it will return in future pregnancies. In a few women, however, pregnancy uncovers type 1 or type 2 diabetes. It is hard to tell whether these women have gestational diabetes or have just started showing their diabetes during pregnancy. These women will need to continue diabetes treatment after pregnancy.

Many women who have gestational diabetes go on to develop type 2 diabetes years later. There seems to be a link between the tendency to have gestational diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Gestational diabetes and type 2 diabetes both involve insulin resistance. Certain basic lifestyle changes may help prevent diabetes after gestational diabetes.

Losing weight Are you more than 20% over your ideal body weight? Losing even a few pounds can help you avoid developing type 2 diabetes.

Making healthy food choices Follow simple daily guidelines, like eating a variety of foods including fresh fruits and vegetables, limiting fat intake to 30% or less of daily calories, and watching your portion size. Healthy eating habits can go a long way in preventing diabetes and other health problems.

Exercising Regular exercise allows your body to use glucose without extra insulin. This helps combat insulin resistance and is what makes exercise helpful to people with diabetes. Never start an exercise program without checking with your doctor first.
